cold chain: A catalyst for transforming the food sector
India is the second largest producer of fruits & vegetables
in the world. Agriculture is one of the prominent sectors
of Indian economy. Harnessing the compelling strength in biodiversity,
the country is on its way to become the global hub for fresh
produce outsourcing. A large portion of the annual production
constitutes perishable commodities for which temperature controlled
storage has become an essential tool. The present cold storage
capacity in the country is grossly inadequate and with a positive
future outlook for the agro-food processing and retail industry,
there is an urgent need to scale up and develop integrated
cold chain facilities throughout the country. This article
discusses the challenges faced by the food sector and lists
some of the options that could be explored to make India a
competitive force in the domestic and international food sector.
